Having garnered critical acclaim for his past solo records, the Grammy nominated artist’s latest is a freewheeling, Lynchian song-cycle in which his virtuosic performances traverse a living landscape of abstract electronic sound. The album breathes, creaks and sighs through its twelve tracks, with noirish jazz torch songs giving way to skittering drums and cinematic, dubbed-out textures, and features appearances from vocalist Sofie Royer and saxophonist Sam Gendel.
The new album is a romantic, bleached out cycle of songs beginning with Wild Wild West, a track about control and the memory of something known only through imagery, and ending with Drip Drip Drip, a song inspired by Keszler’s father’s last words. Repelled by an ironic disposition, the writing is earnest and cuts straight to the bone. “The world doesn’t feel so static anymore, does it? Everything seems raw, nasty, and real in a way I don’t recall experiencing before. And yet, a heart-on-sleeve approach doesn’t suit me either. So here I am, submerged in…whatever this is. Full of feeling, quietly taking it in.”
